The skeptic nudist: Magnets? For the refrigerator.

I went to a one of those shops where you can return the product if you are not satisfied. That way if the experiment did not turn out as expected I could always get my money back. I bought a magnetic therapy kit which was over 40 Euros at the cheapest place.
The box said 800 gauss; that is, 1600 times higher than the Earth’s magnetic power. However, we must not forget that a magnet’s field is measured on its surface

MESMER, FRANZ ANTON
(1734-1815)

I could see right away that these magnets are exactly the same as those on our fridges. These have an adhesive device to stick on the body’s affected area and are also very colourful as to stick out at spas and to make people buy them. Like those on the fridges, they have narrow bands which alternate the North and South poles which leads to cancel out the field at a very short distance,

(less than 1mm, as it can be shown by inserting papers in between) .Therefore, the field hardly goes through the adhesive tape and through the skin even less. How can it then reach the muscle or the blood?.

To wear magnets is a fashion which comes back from time to time from Paracelsus’ days. The most famous among magnetizers was Mesmer who became popular in Paris in 1778. During his curative experimental sessions, he found out that when he did without the magnets, hiding them from patients, the treatment was as successful as with them on. However, instead of inferring that the magnets were useless, as a scientist or an honest person would have done, he claimed to have discovered “animal magnetism”.
Louis XVl set up a commission of scientists of the stature of Franklin and Lavoisier, among others, who devised a number of experiments which established, beyond any possible doubt, that the resulting effects were due to suggestion.
I only wish our authorities and politicians read these conclusions again and set up scientific commissions which could prevent the average citizen from being swindled .
